Dental Implants

Bellevue Overlake Dental

If you have a single missing tooth or several missing teeth, you may be self-conscious about your smile. Even if you are missing teeth in the back of your mouth, the lost tooth can adversely affect your ability to chew and also cause deterioration of the jawbone. This is why, if you are missing teeth, Bellevue Overlake Dental clinic recommends getting a dental implant as soon as you can manage.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that acts as an artificial tooth root. Implants are designed to function and look just like your natural teeth. Unlike dentures, they have the added benefit of being attached directly to the jawbone so they can stimulate the bone and reduce the risk of bone loss over time. Dental implants are a long-term tooth replacement designed to look, feel, and function like natural teeth.

A complete implant restoration has three parts: the titanium post that fuses with the jawbone, a connector called an abutment, and a custom porcelain crown that looks and functions just like your natural tooth. Because the post is anchored in the jaw, the bone is stimulated when you chew food, which helps reduce the jawbone loss that typically follows a missing tooth.

The Dental Implant Process, Step by Step

1. Consultation and 3D Imaging

Every implant case starts with a thorough evaluation. Dr. Yu uses CBCT 3D imaging to measure your bone volume and map nerves and sinuses before anything is planned, and AI-assisted diagnostics help catch issues a standard X-ray can miss. You will leave the consultation knowing whether implants are a good fit for you, what the treatment will involve, and what it will cost.

2. Implant Placement

The titanium post is placed in the jaw during a minor surgical visit under local anesthetic, with sedation options available if you are anxious. Most patients are surprised by how manageable the appointment is, and many return to their normal routine within a day or two.

3. Healing and Osseointegration

Over the following months, the bone grows around and bonds with the post — a process called osseointegration. Healing time varies from patient to patient; a typical range is three to six months. A temporary restoration can often be worn in the meantime, so you are not left with a visible gap.

4. Abutment and Final Crown

Once the implant is stable, the abutment and your custom crown are attached. The crown is color-matched to your surrounding teeth, and your bite is adjusted so the new tooth feels natural from the first day.

Who Is a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most healthy adults with a missing tooth are candidates for implants. The main requirements are healthy gums and enough jawbone to support the post. Factors that can affect healing — such as smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, or active gum disease — do not always rule implants out, but they need to be evaluated and managed first.

If you have been told you lack the bone for an implant, ask us anyway: bone grafting can often rebuild enough support, and the CBCT scan gives us a precise picture of what is possible. The only way to know for certain is an in-person evaluation.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Some of the top benefits of dental implants include:

  • Implants are strong, stable, and highly durable.
  • With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, implants can last for decades.
  • Implants help to retain your natural face shape and smile.
  • Implants protect healthy bone structure.
  • You can eat your favorite foods confidently with implants.
  • An implant-restored crown can't develop cavities, though the surrounding gums still need daily care.
  • Implants protect your healthy teeth from damage.
  • Implants keep teeth in place without risk of shifting or a loose fit.
  • A dentist can construct your implants with predictable results.
  • Implanted teeth will not move, click, or shift, like they can with dentures.
  • Implants stimulate the bone to encourage bone growth and prevent bone loss.

Recovery and Aftercare

Some soreness and swelling in the first few days after placement is normal and usually well controlled with over-the-counter pain relief and cold compresses. We provide clear aftercare instructions and check on your healing at follow-up visits.

Long-term, implants are cared for much like natural teeth: daily brushing and flossing, and regular cleanings and checkups. Keeping the gums around an implant healthy is the single most important thing you can do to protect your investment.

Replacing a Full Arch: All-on-4®

If you are missing most or all of the teeth in an arch, individual implants are not the only option. The All-on-4® treatment concept uses four strategically placed implants to support a full set of fixed replacement teeth — often without bone grafting.

Cost, Insurance, and Financing

The cost of an implant depends on how many teeth are being replaced and whether preparatory work such as bone grafting is needed — so we always give you a written treatment plan with exact pricing before you commit. Many insurance plans cover part of implant treatment, and we offer payment options to spread out the rest. See our dental implant financing page for details.
